Staff Engineer, Cloud – Independent Contractor (Remote, U.S.-Based)

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Staff Engineer, Cloud (Independent Contractor) to join our Software Development team. This fully remote position is only open to candidates based in the United States.

Job Summary:
We’re looking for a Staff Engineer with deep expertise in backend and cloud-native application architecture. You will lead complex initiatives across our platform. You’ll work closely with product, engineering, and infrastructure team members to drive technical strategy and ensure high-quality execution across existing services. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives on solving architectural challenges, driving operational excellence, and guiding the technical direction of a fast-moving team.
What does this role involve?
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and lead the implementation of scalable backend systems using Node.js (TypeScript) / Python and MongoDB in the AWS environment.
- Support current integrations, write and integrate software components.
- Architect and optimize serverless workflows while leading the design, development of scalable, performant, and secure backend solutions.
- Design and develop innovative solutions that focus on incorporating AI technologies.
- Collaborate across teams to align system design with business goals and cross-functional requirements.
- Contribute to and maintain services, especially around data processing and event-driven workflows.
- Set and support engineering best practices in coding, CI/CD, observability, and development quality.
- Receive and offer technical feedback through pair programming and code reviews.
- Participate in the requirements refining, estimation, and user story development.
- Contribute to research technologies and fast prototyping, compose detailed design specifications.
- Actively participate in root cause analysis.

What are we looking for in a candidate?
Experience and Requirements:
- BS Degree, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems
- 7+ years of backend development experience in Node.js / Python or related server-side frameworks.
- Strong experience with MongoDB, including design, performance tuning, aggregations, including search, and indexing.
- Proven experience designing, developing, and delivering serverless services in the AWS environment.
- Ability to lead code reviews, document architectural decisions, and coach engineers on performance and maintainability.
- Experience leading project teams in a consumer internet or technology company.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on delivering high-quality documents.
- AWS cloud certification will be a plus
Knowledge and Abilities required:
- This position will require the ability to effectively troubleshoot and reason through problems to reach solutions.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills as the independent contractor will collaborate with various departments within the company.
- This independent contractor must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and should be comfortable managing tasks under frequent, tight deadlines.

- Must be based in the United States
- Must provide own laptop and have a reliable internet connection
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Primarily sedentary: sitting (75%), walking (15%), standing (10%), lifting up to 10 pounds.
- Standard home/office environment; moderate noise levels.
- Occasional travel required. Must be able to travel and work extended schedules as needed
